This oral irrigating syringe is uniquely designed to effectively access infected gum (periodontal) pockets and deliver a variety of healing solutions that can be helpful in treating moderate to advanced gum disease (See Chapter 2 in Your Guide to Healthy Teeth for a description of periodontal disease). It has an elongated, soft plastic tip that is non-irritating to sensitive teeth and the tip can be extended into even the deepest periodontal pockets. It has the ability to reach more deeply into an infected periodontal (gum) pocket than the water irrigator and is the only oral hygiene home care tool that I know of that can successfully and safely access these deeper periodontal pockets.
I recommend it to anyone who is scheduled to undergo, or has had, periodontal surgery. Used in support of the toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, and the water irrigator it can help heal infected gum pockets prior to surgery. When used after periodontal surgery it can help accelerate the healing process, speed your recovery, and prevent the return of gum disease. It is a wonderful oral hygiene tool that can be used at home for those with gum disease and for emergency situations where irrigating the gum pocket can bring relief.

The mouth mirror with a pen light is a very important tool for performing an oral self-examination. Examining your mouth, or your child's, at home, is an important part of the prevention process and will allow you to monitor the health of your gums and teeth. There are many benefits to an oral self-examination, including early detection of dental disease, oral cancer, and other serious diseases whose symptoms may show up first in the mouth. You can also use the mouth mirror and pen light to check out your mouth if you think you have an oral emergency.

The Water Pik is one of the most important dental tools for anyone with moderate to severe gum disease.
As gum disease advances it deepens the gum (periodontal) pocket, making it impossible to access it with the toothbrush or even dental floss. Once this infected pocket exceeds 3 millimeters (about 1/10 of an inch) the only way you can get to it, other than by a professional dental cleaning, is by using a Water Pik or an oral irrigating syringe. Used correctly the Water Pik will direct a regulated stream of water (or other gum healing solutions such as mouthwash or salt water) into the gum pocket, removing food particles, bacteria, and toxins.
Even if only water is used in the Water Pik, the health of the gums will improve. But research has shown that if anti-bacterial agents are used with the Water Pik an even greater improvement in gum health will take place. But it isn’t a cure-all! As effective and beneficial as a Water Pik may be, it will not remove adhered plaque or calculus (tartar) on the teeth or roots. This can only be removed by a professional cleaning. However, if you have any form of gum (periodontal) disease the Water Pik is a superior preventive tool for treating and healing any stage of gum disease. It is also valuable to prevent gum disease from reoccurring in those who have previously undergone periodontal surgery or whose gums have receded.
The Water Pik is also an important preventive tool for people with dental implants. Implants need even more care than natural teeth and poor oral hygiene is given as the main reason for implant failure. I also believe that the Water Pik is an absolutely necessary preventive dental tool for anyone with dental implants and those with braces.
The Water Pik can also be used effectively for treating bad breath because it can deliver mouthwash between the teeth and in the gum pocket. These areas are often sources of oral odors and in many cases the toothbrush or floss may not reach the offending areas. Because the Water Pik we offer comes with 3 Tongue Cleaners you can use them to deal with another source of undesirable odors, the tongue.
